My imaginary portraits started in 2012 when a friend of mine asked me to do a drawing on his iPad using the ‘Zen Brush’ app.
After a short while I was hooked and began to produce multitudes of characters. Maybe it was just because of the app’s name, but I was inspired to re-interpret brush portraits done by Zen Masters such as Hakuin Ekaku (1686-1769).
My characters may appear flawed, but like myself, they are on an inner journey that will end in perfection/enlightenment.
To begin with, all my drawings were in black, white and grey. More recently, I have added colour using Photoshop to give some of them an extra dimension.
These drawings in their turn have inspired a new body of figurative ceramic work. I have really enjoyed the challenge of translating the flat drawings into rounded forms.
